Commit Message

Linus Lüssing Feb. 16, 2019, 9:50 p.m. UTC
With this patch multicast packets with a limited number of destinations
(current default: 16) will be split and transmitted by the originator as
individual unicast transmissions.

Wifi broadcasts with their low bitrate are still a costly undertaking.
In a mesh network this cost multiplies with the overall size of the mesh
network. Therefore using multiple unicast transmissions instead of
broadcast flooding is almost always less burdensome for the mesh
network.

The maximum amount of unicast packets can be configured via the newly
introduced multicast_fanout parameter. If this limit is exceeded
distribution will fall back to classic broadcast flooding.

The multicast-to-unicast conversion is performed on the initial
multicast sender node and counts on a final destination node, mesh-wide
basis (and not next hop, neighbor node basis).

Changelog v4:

* Fixed return value in "batadv_mcast_forw_tt_send()" for an empty
TT entry: the want-all lists still need to be tried. This fixes
  potential packetloss.

Changelog v3:

* removed sysfs support for multicast_fanout

Changelog v2:

* rebased to master (no conflicts/changes)
* fixed a double free bug in the batman-adv multicast-to-multi-unicast
patch: led to crashes, especially on netifd restart/shutdown
  -> https://github.com/freifunk-gluon/gluon/issues/1468
* fixed skb memory leaks in error cases
* added netlink support for multicast_fanout
* updated multicast_fanout sysfs ABI doc date to Feb 2019

Can you try to add variable to make the this block to look more like a
reversed xmas tree.

I find it confusing that the send functions are supposed to consume all skbs
but you are now introducing send functions (called here - not the function
batadv_mcast_forw_send itself) which don't do this. I understand that this
make sense for the logic of these two functions but it is still confusing
to see a send functions which doesn't behave like the other ones. Maybe you
can drop the "_send" part?

I am also not sure what in mind here for the limit? The only thing
which comes to my mind right now is that we have a fanout of something
low (16) and the precondition test succeeded because it can only find 16
entries. And in the meantime, 100 or more new entries are added. In this
situation, you would only send to 32 neighbors, right?

There is no new code which uses send.h. So I see no reason why this should be
added. Or did I miss something?

Kind regards,

This function doesn't have a limit parameter.

Kind regards,
	Sven

Right, that's the situation I had in mind. If the number of
transmissions were growing too large somehow to limit them.

On the other hand, now that you reiterate this maybe this is such
a minor case that it is not worth bothering for now.

Hm, I think I'll remove these intermediate limit checks to
simplify things. So that we only check once in batadv_mcast_forw_mode()
for the mcast_fanout.
